Like many nowadays, I have had several careers. I currently derive incomes from journalism and from teaching. When I first went to university I studied Asian history and languages (UNSW, ANU and UTS) and subsequently lived and worked in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and China. I have visited every country in Asia on multiple occasions over the last 30 years. Now I write about the economics of technology change in Asia and attempt to explain contemporary issues within a historical context.
But that is only one side of my interests. I also studied biological sciences as part of a medical degree I began at Otago university in New Zealand. I did not finish this degree but it gave me a fascination for evolutionary biology. I think it is my understanding of the mechanisms of natural history that give me my insights into contemporary political and economic issues, by similarly relating them to historical process.
